FIFA Quality Pro vs FIFA Quality vs IMS: Soccer Ball Certifications Explained

Soccer ball certification marks confuse almost every first-time buyer. Here is what each tier means, what gets tested, and — most importantly — when the license is worth paying for.

The Three Marks

FIFA Quality Pro is the highest tier — the standard required for balls used in top-level FIFA-sanctioned competition. FIFA Quality is the standard tier below it, still a demanding match-ball benchmark. IMS — International Match Standard — is an independent mark indicating a ball passes international match-quality testing without the FIFA licensing program.

What the Tests Cover

Certification testing measures the physical behavior of the ball:

• Circumference — must stay within a tight band for the size
• Weight — measured dry, within specified grams
• Sphericity (roundness) — variance across many measured diameters
• Rebound — consistent bounce height from a standard drop
• Water absorption — how much weight the ball gains when wet
• Pressure loss — air retention over time
• Shape and size retention — the ball is fired repeatedly against a steel plate and must hold its geometry

FIFA Quality Pro applies stricter tolerances than FIFA Quality on the same dimensions — and adds harder shooting-test requirements.

What Certification Costs You

Two separate costs hide in a "certified" ball: the engineering cost of building a ball that passes (better materials, tighter process control) and the licensing cost of the mark itself, which flows into your unit price. That second cost is why the next section matters.

"Manufactured to Spec" — the Smart Middle Path
